THE TALE OF GEGE RIVER

The Gege River has a rich history that dates back to the tales passed down by the ancestors of the Gege community. According to the stories, the river was believed to be a kind-hearted, loving, and pure feminine entity that resided in the water body. The locals considered her spirit to be their protector against evil occurrences, making her a revered figure in the community.

In exchange for her services, the community members had to meet certain obligations, such as keeping the water body clean and free from pollutants. This was essential to maintain the purity of the river and keep it fit for the spirit's dwelling.

To honour her and the meritorious service she rendered to the residents of the community, the river was worshipped at the end of every year. The ritual served as a tribute to remind the community members of her existence and to appreciate her for safeguarding the community against evil forces.

However, despite the importance of keeping the river clean and honouring the spirit's service, the community members were only able to keep their promise for a couple of years. As a result, the river's purity was compromised, and the community's relationship with the spirit was strained.
